T.D. Allman, author of Rogue State: America at War with the World, is a graduate of Harvard College and Oxford University, and a foreign corresondent who also has written extensively about U.S. affairs, including urban policy.

He also is the author of Unmanifest Destiny and Miami: City of the Future, and is a former Edward R. Murrow Fellow at The Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He is also a former Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal. His profile of Dick Cheney will appear in a forthcoming issue of Rolling Stone.

Other current books to which he is a contributor are Busted (which contains his analysis of the war on drugs and the Washington appropriations process), These United States, and Killed, a collection of major journalism which editors refused to print.

A contributor to Rolling Stone Magazine, and to the National Geographic Magazine, Dr. Allman also has worked as a Staff Writer for The New Yorker. For eight years he was foreign correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, before that a contributing editor of Harper's magazine.

Writing in Harper's more than twenty years ago, he predicted the renaissance of America's cities, and dismissed the "urban crisis" of the time as an exericise in academic-journalist hype and hysteria. Earlier, as a 23-year-old freelance journalist, he exposed the C.I.A. war in Laos, coining the phrase "secret war" to describe clandestine U.S. military operations in Third World countries. Another of Allman's articles, "How the U.S. Lost Vietnam and Won Asia," foresaw the rise of the Pacific Rim.

More recently he has reported from Colombia, Barcelona, Iraq, Nigeria and the former Yugoslavia, including Bosnia and Kossovo. He got his start as a $75-a-month reporter for The Bangkok Post, and right from the start was controversial -- not only breaking stories the pack journalists missed, but rescuing massacre victims he encountered on the battlefields.

Since then, Allman's articles have appeared in most of the world's major publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Economist and Le Monde.

He also has reported from more than eighty other countries, including Cambodia, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Libya, Cuba and El Salvador. Among the many present and past chiefs of state and heads of government he has interviewed are: Boris Yeltsin, Helmut Kohl, Ariel Sharon, Muammar Gaddafi, Yasser Arafat, Felipe Gonzalves, Mario Soares, Oscar Arias, Shimon Peres, Manuel Antonio Noriega, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Hosni Mubarak, Benjamin Netanyahu, Corazon Aquino, King Bhumipol Adulyadej of Thailand, King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia and King Juan Carlos of Spain.

T.D. Allman is also a co-author of "Why Bosnia?" His writings have been anthologized in a number of books. These include "The Collected Traveler: Provence" as well as the highly-respected, two-volume compendium, "Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism 1959-1975."
